privacy policy

This privacy policy explains how Anekaanta (“we”, “us”) handles information in connection with the website anekaanta.org (the “Site”) and the rclone Google Drive application (the “App”). It applies to visitors of the Site and to the single user of the App, and it describes what Google user data the App accesses, how we use it, how we store and protect it, how we share it, and how long we keep it.

By using the Site or the App, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Who we are

Anekaanta is a policy advisory practice operated by Pranesh Prakash. For any question about this policy or your data, contact pranesh@anekaanta.org.

2. Google user data we access

The App is a private, single-user installation of rclone. When its user authorises it, the App accesses that user's own Google Drive account only. It does not access any other Google account, and it does not access Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, or any other Google service. The Google user data the App accesses is:

• Google Drive file content — the contents of the user's own files and documents;
• Google Drive file metadata — names, sizes, types, folder structure, and modification dates of the user's own files;
• Account information — the email address of the authorised account and the OAuth tokens needed to authenticate the connection.

To access this data the App requests the following Google Drive permissions (scopes), each used only for the purpose stated:

• https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive — to read, create, edit, rename, move, and delete the user's own files;
• https://www.googleapis.com/auth/docs — to read and edit the user's own Google Docs; and
• https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.metadata.readonly — to read metadata about the user's own files.

3. How we use Google user data

We use Google user data solely to provide the App's file-management functionality that the user requests. That means:

• uploading the user's local files and folders to their Google Drive;
• downloading files from their Google Drive to their computer;
• keeping a local folder and their Google Drive in sync; and
• listing, reading, renaming, moving, and deleting their own files.

We do not use Google user data for advertising, marketing, profiling, analytics, creditworthiness, or any purpose unrelated to providing the App's functionality. No human reads Google user data, except with the user's affirmative consent, for security purposes such as investigating abuse, or where required by law.

4. How we store and protect Google user data

We apply the following data-protection measures:

• Direct transfer. Google user data is transferred directly between the user's own device and Google's servers over encrypted HTTPS/TLS connections. We do not operate any server that stores copies of Google Drive files.
• Local-only credentials. OAuth tokens and the rclone configuration are stored only on the user's own device, protected by that device's operating-system file permissions and disk encryption. They are never transmitted to us.
• Access limitation. The App acts only on the single Google account that authorised it, and cannot access any other account.
• Standards. Our use of Google user data adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

5. How we share, transfer, or disclose Google user data

We do not sell, rent, trade, or share Google user data with third parties, and we do not transfer Google user data to third parties for advertising or for any purpose other than providing the App's functionality. The only disclosures we may make are:

• to Google, as necessary to carry out the file operations the user requests (Google is the storage provider the user chose);
• where required by law, regulation, or valid legal process; or
• to investigate security issues or abuse, or to protect our rights, with the user's consent where required.

6. Data retention and deletion

• Google Drive files. We do not retain or store copies of the user's Google Drive files. They remain in the user's Google Drive and are managed by the user.
• OAuth tokens and configuration. These remain on the user's own device only until the user revokes access or deletes the local configuration.
• How to delete. The user can revoke the App's access at any time from the Google Account permissions page, and can delete the local rclone configuration from their device. Once access is revoked and the configuration is deleted, no Google user data remains with the App.
• Email correspondence. If you email us, we keep your message and address only as long as needed to handle the matter and for our records, then delete it.

7. Website visitors

The Site is a static website. We do not use cookies, analytics, advertising, fingerprinting, or tracking scripts, and we do not build profiles of visitors. Our hosting provider may automatically record standard technical information in server logs — such as IP address, the pages requested, the referring page, and browser user agent — for security and basic operational purposes. We do not use these logs to identify individuals, and we retain them only as long as necessary for those purposes.

8. Your choices and rights

You can revoke the App's access to your Google account at any time through the Google Account permissions page. You may also contact us to ask about, correct, or request deletion of any personal information you have sent us, and we will respond within a reasonable period.

9. Children

The Site and the App are not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

10. Third-party links

The Site may link to external websites, including rclone.org. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. If we make a material change to how we access, use, store, or share Google user data, we will update this page and revise the date accordingly.
